Prayer Spaces and Reflection
At St Peter’s, we recognise the need for developing the spiritual growth of our children through opportunities for reflection.
Therefore, we ensure that each classroom has its own reflection space so that children, and staff, are given the time and space to:
• Engage in quiet reflection in a space that encourages children to calm their minds and process their thoughts and feelings;
• Pray in a designated area which is for children of all or no faith so they can engage in personal prayer or meditation;
• Explore their spirituality in a safe and respectful environment.
What you will see in our Reflection Spaces
Each classroom has a clearly identifiable, accessible reflection space that is free from clutter and presented in line with the school’s display policy. Decoration is simple and purposeful to support the theme and ambience of the space. Our Christian vision and definition of spirituality will be displayed within the space. Each reflection space includes a Bible, a cross and an LED candle. The Bible will be age-appropriate for the children in that classroom. These artefacts may be used during class worship or for individual reflection.
Our current Christian value will be referenced within the space. At certain points in the year, additional artefacts may be included to inspire curiosity and wonder, for example, a palm leaf leading up to Easter or a Bible quote selected to provoke reflection and discussion. In all classes, each reflection space includes a floor book where pupils can record and share personal reflections from RE or Jigsaw lessons. Sometimes we use themes explored in our weekly Picture News collective worship sessions.
There is also a reflection space outside our school hall, providing an additional opportunity for pupils and staff to pause, pray, think and wonder. At times, our pupil groups may help shape this space.
Considerations for our Reflection Spaces
Reflection spaces are open to all children during designated times, such as break times. Children may also be directed to a reflection space if an adult feels it is appropriate for example, if a child expresses a need to pray or reflect during a lesson.
Children are encouraged to treat reflection spaces with respect and to maintain a calm, purposeful atmosphere. Reflection spaces are open to children of all faiths and none. They are expected to use the space in ways that respect their own beliefs and those of others.
Prayer Space Leaders (pupil leaders) are assigned to each class to help maintain these areas. They monitor use and content, with adult support, ensuring that pupils have a voice in how the space is used. Adults ensure the spaces remain purposeful and up to date.
